- A student says that he uploaded his/her assignment file(s), but when I check the grading page for that assignment, I see "No submission" next to his/her hame. Is this possible? If so, is there a way I can verify the student's claim?
- Yes, this is quite possible, for either of the following reasons:
- The student may have uploaded a file attachment, but failed to save or submit the assignment (Note: if the student saved the submission, but did not submit it, you should see an indicator of "Draft -" next to the student's name on the assignment submission list page, and when you select the user to open the submission, you should be able to see the attached files, even though the list will indicate "No Submission" for the student.)
- On an assignment set to allow multiple submissions, the student may have submitted the assignment, then uploaded a new file without submitting the assignment again. If the student uploads a new file and fails to re-submit, the old file(s) are deleted and the new file(s) are not actually attached to the assignment, leaving the appearance of a blank submission.
To attempt to access these lost attachments, an instructor can use the T-Square Management Tools as follows:
- Log in to the management tools, and then on the main page find the course that you are teaching where you need to recover an attachment.
- On the worksite details page, find the student's name in the "Worksite Enrollment" section. If you have multiple sections in the worksite or have worksite groups defined, you will have to select the appropriate group (or the --Show All Users-- option) before you will see any student names.)
- Place your mouse cursor over the student's name, and then select "View Attachments" from the pop-up control panel.
- You will get a new page that lists out all of the attachments uploaded by the student into your course worksite. To find the right one, you will need to have a sense of what the filename should be, or know the period of time during which the assignment was open. Each attachment file will be listed with a timestamp showing exactly when the student uploaded it. The attachment filename will be a web link, which should allow you to download that file and open it.
Please note that you must have "Instructor", "Instructional Designer", or "Head TA" level access to view attachments using this tool. If you are a regular TA, contact your instructor if you need to verify and recover an attachment for a student in one of your course sections.
- A student told me that he saved his assignment as a draft, but we checked after the deadline and it was not automatically submitted.
- Auto-submit works off the "Accept until" date option and not the "Due date" option in Assignments. If both dates are the same, then the work would be automatically submitted at the due date.
- If a student works on an assignment and leaves her or his text for some time without doing something, she is forced to log in after coming back again if she tries to submit this assignment. However, after logging in the text is gone. All the work is lost. Is there any way to prevent this?
- A user's T-Square session does time out after a period of inactivity, and when this happens anything you are actively working on in a T-Square page that has not been saved will be lost. The best way to avoid losing work from T-Square is to save frequently, making use of the "Save Draft" button available in most tools within T-Square. Another way of avoiding the time-out issue is to compose your assignment text outside of T-Square, using a text editing utility on your local computer. Then, you can cut-and-paste your text into T-Square and immediately save it to your assignment. Whatever you do, never leave your computer without completing an action or saving your work.
- Once I've graded an assignment that a student submitted online and I press "Return" to return the assignment with comments to the student, where does it go? Is the assignment returned via email or to the student's private message area on T-Square?
- The Assignments tool has its own storage area. Students will access the materials you return to them along with your comments through the Assignment tool. Note: new for Fall 2007, there is an improved method for downloading, grading, commenting, correcting and return assignments for the class as a whole rather than one student at a time. This method is designed for off-line grading. There is no official documentation, but CETL is preparing a tutorial, so check the tutorials page for updates.
- I graded the submissions for an assignment, checked the "Resubmission" box, made sure the assignment "Accept Until" date was in the future, and saved my changes, but the students still can't return their assignments to me and they don't see my comments. What do I need to do?
- To return the assignments and allow students to see them and resubmit them, you have to select the "Return to Student" button instead of the "Save" button when you're grading a submission. You'll need to do this for each student's submission that you want to return.
